Summer Intensive and 200 hour Teacher Training!

Due to the nature of the content of this training it is particularly well suited for those students and professionals in the mental health fields interested in exploring yoga personally and professionally.

Overview

This program is directed by Elizabeth Rogers assisted by Julie Stewart (Ashtanga) and Scott Schroeder (Iyengar). This intensive and teacher training is primarily Ashtanga based with support from the Iyengar tradition. This is a small group training and is limited to 12 practitioners.
This training is designed to further refine your practice space and to support those who wish to teach with a framework for doing so. This training provides the practitioner the option of registering for RYT 200 status with Yoga Alliance. This is your entry level teacher training designation within the context of Yoga Alliance.

We teach from the spaces we construct through practice. Therefore, this intensive is practice based. We will practice together Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday interweaving awareness practice, technique and methodology, functional anatomy and physiology, therapeutics and philosophy. In addition we will meet Saturdays and Sundays for further studies including functional anatomy and physiology, adjustments, pranayama, philosophy, somatic psychology and ethics. We will also explore the intersections of classical yoga practice and philosophy with other contemplative practices including buddhism, contemporary art and movement languages, and psychoanalysis.
Pre-requisites
For those wishing to pursue 200 hour registration with Yoga Alliance: A minimum of two years of experience with yoga or equivalent experience in another contemplative movement tradition or classical/contemporary dance is required. Familiarity with the Ashtanga primary series is suggested but not required. All others please contact us to discuss suitability!
Please note that while the Ashtanga practice is demanding in its traditional form, it can be modified to accommodate limitations. We will all learn from situations that require modification!
Schedule

(please note that we realize participants will miss hours. Arrangements may be made to make up these hours for those wishing to apply for 200 hour RYT with Yoga Alliance. We will not meet the weekend of July 4th holiday).
From Tuesday June 4th until the last Weekend of August (as a group we may decide to lengthen this out into September taking 2-3 weekends off):
Tuesdays and Thursdays: 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.

Saturdays: 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (30 minute break from 11:30-12:00)

Sundays: 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
(30 minute break from 10:30 – 11:00)
Director of Training
Elizabeth Rogers has been practicing Ashtanga Yoga and teaching small groups and individuals for more than 15 years and wrote the curriculum for the Yoga Alliance 200 and 500 hour Ashtanga-based training programs at Atlanta Yoga. She is a psychoanalyst by training and has studied both in the US and abroad.
Elizabeth currently maintains a private practice as a yoga therapist at Atlanta Yoga and will be accepting psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic clients in a private practice setting beginning mid-April. Elizabeth is also active in the worlds of plastic arts and contemporary dance/movement.
Tuition

$2,850. Payment plans available

Individual and Small Group Intensives

Individual and Small Group intensives are specially designed depth-oriented training/practice programs. Each is tailored to meet the specific needs of the individual or the individuals in a small group. These training/practice programs, like our teacher training/apprenticeship programs include set class times with our practice groups and individual sessions. They may also include small group sessions on specific topics or areas of interest, guided practicum/mentoring for teachers, and supervision for therapeutic practitioners.

Many students/practitioners engage in teacher training in order to deepen their practice or with the hope of addressing a specific aspect of practice. This option allows the student/practitioner to work with Elizabeth to design an intensive that specifically meets their current needs and addresses their areas of inquiry and interest in depth. Most of these hours can later be rolled into a 200 or 500 hour teacher training at Atlanta Yoga if so desired. These hours will also meet YA’s requirements for Continuing Education credits.

These programs are also ideal for those mental health care, health care practitioners, and alternative health care practitioners looking to deepen their own practice and to integrate yoga and mindful movement into their professional practices.

Please contact Elizabeth for more information: atlantayoga@atlantayoga.com | 404.273.4388

We become more delicate and we recognize the importance of the flow of energy and information through our body in all directions. We learn to apply our force in an efficient way and we learn to use “other” forces. We discover the advantage of soft flesh and sensitive hands. We learn to connect to groove even when there is no music. We are aware of people in the room and we realize that we are not in the center of it all. We become more aware of our form since we never look at ourselves in a mirror; there are no mirrors…. We change our movement habits by finding new ones, we can be calm and alert at once. –Ohad Naharin

Breath moves. Body moves. Gaze moves. In movement, they grow dense, gather energy. There is a taste of stillness. And the impulse to move rises, again. We extend out. We grow light, fade. We feel the weight of bones and stretch of skin. We feel a weight in the pelvic floor and we remember, we recoil, we return, we pull in again…and we unfold, extend out. In a constructed space of emptiness we find form, and in form, emptiness. To repeat: In movement-the movement of the breath, the body, the gaze, we construct a certain density-within the body, within the psyche. We may call this density derived from movement, paradoxically, stillness; it functions like a weight, an anchor…and in this density, this stillness, we find, again, movement. –Elizabeth Rogers

Iyengar Yoga with Scott Schroeder : Supported Backbends and Beyond.

Saturday March 2nd, 4:00-7:00 p.m.

In this class we will explore the use of backbends to prepare for standing poses, twists and forward bends. The actions of the backbend are present in all the other asanas and are often difficult to access as such. Bringing backbends to the front of the sequence creates interior space early on and allows further extension and depth in asanas such as parsvottanasana, parivrtti trikonasana, and paschimottanasana. We will be using chairs to support the back body in several of the poses, placing strong emphasis on the proper actions of the legs, spine and shoulders so that they work in coordination to achieve maximum effect.

The backbending poses can be modified to accommodate an individual’s limitations. This class will be challenging for newer students. A year experience with some form of yoga required.

Scott Schroeder has been teaching at Stillwater Yoga Studio since 2002. Having come into yoga with a background in martial arts, his practice has spanned over 14 years and has taken him to study abroad in India and to attend a number of different workshops with several of the most adept instructors in the world.
His teaching approach has grown to combine practical real-world experience with a strong emphasis on precision and technique. A dedicated practitioner, he continues to rely on the support of his students, friends, family and fellow teachers to impart his knowledge of yoga with clarity, vitality and authenticity.

Fees: $35

Ashtanga Yoga with Elizabeth Rogers: Practice, Pranayama, and Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras.

Saturday March 9th, 4:00-7:00 p.m.

Join Elizabeth for an All-Levels ashtanga vinyasa practice, followed by an exploration of the classical seated pranayama practice of the ashtanga tradition, and reading/lecture/discussion of the first Pada of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. We will explore these dense verses in their historical context and in the context of contemporary contemplative practices including Yoga, Buddhism and Psychoanalysis. Please have a copy of Georg Feuerstein’s translation of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras or let us know if you cannot do so and we will have a copy available for you the day of the workshop.

Saturday March 30th, 2013, 4-7pm, $35

Handstand is a triumph of human freedom, potential, and creativity. To get there, though, requires intention, courage, and full consciousness in mind and body. Explore progressive techniques and variations for moving into and out of handstand with increasing fearlessness, steadiness, and grace. These same techniques open up the hovering space of the vinyasa transitions of Surya Namaskar A. Come as you are – together we’ll consciously confront our fears and doubts and enjoy this revelatory and exhilarating play. Some yoga experience is recommended, specifically the ability to kick up to handstand unassisted at the wall.

All-Levels (ability to kick up to handstand unassisted at wall required)
